White Shoes & The Couples Company

In September 2007 White Shoes & The Couples Company's first album was relased in USA, Mexico, Canada, Australia and Japan on Minty Fresh Records. As far as I know White Shoes & The Couples Company are the first Indonesian group to be signed at the Amercian indie pop label. The group is well known to be one of the best indie pop bands of Indonesia, and was also mentioned in the world famous Rolling Stones magazine, as one of the top 25 best bands on MySpace. White Shoes & The Couples Company has also just released the new EP (in Indonesia only) named Skenario Masa Muda. It was also release in a very limited edition that was sold out in only two weeks. If you haven't already listened to this brilliant band it is about time you put your white shoes on and take a listen!

Don't Call It Puppy Love

Don't Call It Puppy Love
By
Linus' Blanket

I'm a puppy, you're a kitty
Don't you think it's a big tragedy
Feel like I'm in some language hell

We'll overcome our taste barrier
Remember I'm a yorkshire terrier
Picky yorky, mostly like you, dear

Let me share my doggybag with you
Can't you see my tail wagging for you
Don't call it puppy love

Let me share my doggybag with you
Can't you see my tail wagging for you
You'll never be gloomy again
We will be happy always
Tell me you won't call it puppy love

I know this song is about a puppy falling in love with a kitty, but I couldn't find any good pictures, so I chose this one instead, because I thought they were really cute! :)

Now The Pancakes (Deday) is out with her new album 1,2,3,4,5,6, cheese! It includes even more cute and fun songs to fulfill your pancakes collection. Dejay is maybe known for making a bit childish music, but her music is a lot more than just cute melodies. She also has a a very special gift for writing, like in the song clouds (track 4), where she sings about the time of our lives where we all have to figure out our places in this world. Pancakes has never failed to deliver something new and refreshing and I hope that Dejay will continue surpising us with more good music in the future.

It includes 18 tracks from different artists from both South Korea, Japan, Scotland and other places of the world. Among the tracks on the list are Yeongene & BMX Bandits' Save Our Smile (track 10) wich was a project of Duglas and Francis of BMX Bandits, who when playing some shows in Seoul in 2005 heard the beautiful voice of Yeongene and decided to write some songs for her to sing. It became a beautiful mini album containing 4 sweet songs with wonderful lyrics and melodies, wich instantely became a favourite of mine. The title track on the cd was the song Save Our Smiles, wich is now also included in this new compilation. Also included in this cd are Japanese Instant Cytron with the song Give me tempo (track 17), Indonesian Mocca with the song I Remember (track 8) and Canadian The Heavy Blinkers with the song Filtered Light (track 7). 我不懂搖滾樂 (I Don't Know Rockn' Roll)

I mentioned the Taiwan band 雀斑 (Que Ban) in my blog entry about some of my favourite compilations. Now their new mini album 我不懂搖滾樂 (I Don't Know Rockn' Roll) is finally out on Silent Agreement! You can expect to hear lots of great indie pop tunes with both a female and a male voice. The music is very calm and nice to listen to. It will sure get you in a happy mood! Also the song 朋友之歌 (Track 2) from the Grassland Music compilation is in this cd. Although I don't understand many of the languages of the music I listen to, it doesn't matter. I think you can listen to the music anyway, and still find that the musicians are very talentful and have laid lot's of hard work in it or simply had a good time making it. That is what is most importent to me, and 雀斑 (Que Ban) is a very good example of this. I will look at what I can hear - the melodies, the instruments and the voices. I wish I knew all languages in the world, but I guess that will never happen. But well anyways, listen to 雀斑 (Que Ban) and fall in love!

Track List:

1. 太陽餅
2. 朋友之歌
3. 阿呆
4. Sunset Time
5. 檸檬頌
6. 毛衣
7. 登登登
8. 火星物語

5 of my favourite compilations

I like to find new compilations by different labels. It is a good way to get to learn some new artists that you didn't knew about before, and that you may like after you got to listen to them. Here are 5 of my favourite compilations made by Asian indie labels:

1) guitar pop crazy! - by bluebadge label (Japan)

This is the 3rd compilation by bluebadge label. It includes 17 songs coming from Japan, but also one song by Hong Kong favourite The Pancakes (Dejay). On the cd you will get to hear lots of cute pop songs that will make everyone smile - at least that's what they did to me. When I first heard the samples on blubadge label's website, I wasn't in doubt that I just got to have this compilation. It includes many of my already favourite Japanese bands such as Spaghetti Vabune!, The Caraway, cyclon86, melting holidays, margarets hope*, sloppy joe and also choco wich is a solo project of singer chee of Spaghetti Vabune! Besides all theese bands, I also got to learn about other great artists. I especially enjoyed the song Hello by showcase (track 2), wich is a really rare song that I believe can only be found here. This is also the compilation wich I have named my blog after. Overall this is a really great cd that I will reccomend to everyone.

2) Grassland Music - by Silent Agreement (Taiwan)

I really like this compilation. It includes some of the finest indie pop bands of Taiwan and Hong Kong. Among the bands that are included in the cd are My Little Airport, The Marshmallow Kisses, Dolly's Pillbox, 1976 and Nylas. I was pleasent surprised to hear the song Funny Trip by 旋轉木妮 (track 2), wich was a really cute and fast pop song with a melody and sweet voice that is hard to forget once you've already listened to it. The song has a lot of power and you can't help, but move your feet to the good rythm. I also enjoyed 朋友之歌 by 雀斑 (track 4) very much. It is a slow song, but still with an esence of happaniness in it. For me it made me feel very relaxed and left me with a big smile on my face. I believe this is one of the best introductions to Taiwan and Hong Kong indie you can get.
3) Peachy little secrets - by Fruit Records (Singapore)
This is the first compilation from Fruit Records and includes 20 songs from 11 different places on earth - Austrailia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and USA. With so many different artist on one cd, it really shows that there can be made good pop music all around the world. Track 2 on the cd is a song made by one of the most well known artists in Indonesia called Mocca and is a combination with the Swedish pop duo Club 8, who comes from Labrador Records, one of Swedens finest pop labels. This song is also included in Mocca's second album Friends and the two voices of Arina and Karolina blends really good together. You will also get to hear lots of different languages in the cd, like the Spanish group La Casa Azul's song Prefiero Bailar or Brazilian Luisa Mandou Um Beijo's - Amarelinha. This is pop at it's best!

4) SMALLROOM 002 : SONGS FROM THE AUDIENCE - by Smallroom (Thailand)

This is the second compilation from the leading Bangkok indie pop label. This cd includes all the best Thai artists with lots of sweet pop songs along with some electro pop, wich makes this wonderful combination. You will get to hear lots of great instruments and singing, nice melodies and overall 14 brilliant pop songs from some of Thailands finest pop bands. One of my personal favourite Thai bands are Penguin Villa, wich also has the track A song for us (track 8) included in this compilation. I can also reccomend you to hear the other compilations from Smallroom, wich all are good intruductions to the best music of Thailand!

5) Story Of Dogs - by Mnet Media (South Korea)

This is a compilation series that came in two - Story Of Dogs and Story Of Cats. Both albums includes some og Korea's best artists who is singing about theese two animals that most people love. It's hard to choose one of the cd's from the other, but I have just chosen this one although I would say that they are equaly good. The first thing that hit me when I saw that this album was going to come out, was that it included a song by one of my favourite Korean bands Linus' Blanket, who also has the wonderful singer Yeongene who last year released her first solo album wich was made with the guys from Glasgow band BMX Bandits. The song they made for this cd is called Don'T Call It Puppy Love, and includes some good lyrics and a wonderful pop melody as Linus' Blanket is also known for. Besides of Linus' Blanket this compilation also includes other great bands and artists such as Elena, Peppertones and Windy City who are known for their relaxing reggae style and the song 와다다(Wadada) 친구 (track 11) wich is including is this album is no exception.

We Can't Stop Smoking In The Vicious And Blue Summer

Finally Hong Kong based My Little Airport's new album We Can't Stop Smoking In The Vicious And Blue Summer is here. As their two previous albums, it is also filled with funny and sweet melodies, but behind all the sweetness are some really strong lyrics, that has a lot to tell. The album includes 17 songs, sung in Cantonese, English and French. Maybe you have already heard Japan Sut Gua (track 2) from the Peachy little secrets... compilation wich was released by the wonderful Singaporean indie pop label named Fruit Records last year. My Little Airport is one of the best known and in my opinion, most interesting indie bands from Hong Kong, wich you might also think after you have listened to the unique style of their music. We Can't Stop Smoking In The Vicious And Blue Summer is yet another wonderful peace of art!

Track list:

1. j'ai peur
2. japan實瓜
3. 我愛官恩娜,都不及愛你的哨牙
4. 馬田的心事

Indie pop for everyone!

Hi everyone! This is my first time making a blog. I've always loved music and especially indie pop since I started listening to Belle & Sebastian when I was about 13 years old. In the past few years I have especially had my eyes open for the Asian indie labels, since I have a big interest in especially this part of the world. I've always loved Japan since I was a little kid and also later I started having an interest in Korea and Indonesia as well. I believe that all countries has their own unique charm that is worth discovering, I just seem to have a special interest in Asia. I really don't know why. Maybe it is because it for me coming from a Scandinavian country, seems to be so different and new. I believe that this is maybe why I started listening to Asian indie pop - because I love both of the things! I believe that Indie music (well.. music in general) coming from Asia (and lots of other places as well) has a lot to offer and it is a shame that many people hasn't realised this yet. I hope that trough this blog I can get people to open their eyes for something new. There is indie pop enough for everyone!
